Who Are Licensed School Psychologists?

School psychologists provide effective services to help children and youth succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. School psychologists provide direct educational and mental health services for children and youth, as well as work with parents, educators, and other professionals to create supportive learning and social environments for all children. School psychologists apply their knowledge of both psychology and education during consultation and collaboration with others. They conduct effective decision making using a foundation of assessment and data collection. School psychologists engage in specific services for children, such as direct and indirect interventions that focus on academic skills, learning, socialization, and mental health. School psychologists provide services to schools and families that enhance the competence and well-being of children, including promotion of effective and safe learning environments, prevention of academic and behavior problems, response to crises, and improvement of family–school collaboration.

Who Are Board Certified Behavior Analysts?

Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) are independent practitioners who provide behavior analytic services using the principles of behavior to implement change. Often, BCBAs work with individuals with developmental disabilities to increase skills, reduce maladaptive behavior and facilitate development. BCBAs also work in organizations to increase system wide skills and reduce behaviors that are incongruent with the workplace's mission and values.

Assessment

Assessment is defined as psychoeducational, developmental, and vocational assessment; evaluation and interpretation of intelligence, aptitudes, interests, academic achievement, adjustment, and motivations, or any other attributes, in individuals or groups, that relate to learning, educational, or adjustment needs.

The evaluation process initiates with an initial intake call, followed by a comprehensive background history. Thereafter, depending on the presenting area of concern, questionnaires may be sent out to gather more information from multiple informants such as parents, teachers or support staff. Specific assessments will be administered that correspond to the reported area of concern. Aggregation of data sources will be utilized to provide a comprehensive picture of the client's profile.

Counseling

Counseling is defined as short-term situation-oriented professional interaction with children, parents, or other adults for amelioration or prevention of learning and adjustment problems. Counseling services relative to the practice of school psychology include verbal interaction, interviewing, behavior techniques, developmental and vocational intervention, environmental management, and group processes.

Length of counseling depends on the working relationship of the licensed school psychologist and client, and the areas of focus.  Counseling can have benefits and risks.  Because counseling often involves areas of skill deficits, stress or adjustment difficulty, a client may experience uncomfortable feelings like sadness, guilt, anger, frustration, loneliness, and helplessness.  However, research demonstrates the numerous positive impacts of counseling such as increased mood, better relationships, solutions to areas of difficulty, skill development and reductions in stress.

The focus of the first few sessions is to develop rapport and  evaluation of the target area of need. Ultimately, the goal of counseling is to support the client is becoming an active agent of change. Throughout the counseling process, the client will be empowered to concurrently use areas of strength to facilitate growth in areas of weakness.
